Many types of bread can potentially spike your blood sugar. But here are 8 low-carb replacements so you won't have to completely ditch your dough.
1) 100% whole grain tortilla wraps should supply the benefits which come from utilizing the whole grain. That means they’ll include the fiber-filled outer layer, or bran, the middle endosperm layer, and the nutrient-packed germ, or the core of the grain. And eating 2 and a half servings of whole grains daily may reduce the risk of a heart attack by 21%
2) Ezekiel bread can supply a vast assortment of nutrients, from B vitamins to folic acid, to beneficial minerals, like calcium, iron, and magnesium. But its sprouting process is the true hero – as it works to break down starches and lowers the carb content.
3) Lettuce wraps can be an excellent veggie-based bun, as 1 cup contains only 8 calories, zero cholesterol, and less than 2 grams of carbs.
4) Almond bread can be an excellent choice, as almond flour has an extremely low GI of less than 1. It also has lower sugar and carb content than regular wheat flour. This form of flour is also a great source of magnesium, which, studies show, aids with blood sugar regulation.
5) Bell peppers can be used to create sandwich buns, and they'll supply potassium, which aids heart health, vitamin A, a.k.a. beta-carotene, which aids eye health, and vitamin B6, otherwise called pyridoxine, which helps your body manufacture red blood cells.
6) Eggplant can be used to create "roll-ups," and 1 cup of cubed eggplant supplies just 20 calories and zero cholesterol. Containing only 4.8 grams of total carbohydrate but 2.4 grams of fiber, eggplant boasts an exceptional carb-to-fiber ratio.
7) Cut a cucumber in half to create the perfect veggie sandwich "bread." 1 cup of cucumber contains just 16 calories, with about 4 grams of carbs and about 0.6 grams of fiber. Even though that carb-to-fiber ratio isn’t exceptional, this low-carb, low-calorie veggie still boasts a GI score of only 15.
8) For the very best burger bun replacement, try Portobello mushrooms. They're a great source of the chemical compound betaine, which may lower the risk of fatty liver disease. And they also contain the amazing antioxidant ergothioneine, which may work to normalize blood sugar levels.

I completely disagree with the wheat bread, where two slices is waaaay too many carbs. I actually found this out by a dietician when I first found out I was prediabetic, over 10 years ago. Blanched almond flour which you do mention is my staple, and I make my own bread and tortillas that are diabetic friendly and taste great. I will have to research the Ezekiel bread. I don’t know too much about that one.
The Ezekiel bread is good and diabetic friendly
@Makeba Cunningham And is taste good.
For those of us that love bread but not the carbs there is good news. If you live near a Kroger there is a bread made by Lewis Bakeries that they sell is low carb. There is the regular bread (white, wheat, honey wheat) that is 5-7 carbs per slice depending on the kind you get. They also have hamburger and hot dog buns. It is about $2.00 a loaf. Now Lewis has introduced a 0 carb version. Also with hamburger and hot dog buns. You will pay more at $5.00 a loaf but at least we now have a choice. The breads are fresh and there is no difference in taste from the high carb breads. Wth that said, we can now have a ham sandwich with swiss cheese, lettuce, and mayo or mustard for less than ONE card per sandwich. Right now I can only find this bread at Kroger but I am sure it can be found at many grocers across the country.
Aunt Millie now has bread, roles, hotdog and hamburger buns that are very low carb. They taste good and my husband A1C has gone back to normal. I make low carb brownies from a brand I buy on line and a low carb ice cream . This gives him a few treats that do not add to his blood sugar. Good luck folks❤️
My husband and I have cut all but 11 carbs per day! Was it easy???? No! But if you’re serious about your diabetes, you CAN do it! I haven’t eaten bread/pasta etc in almost a year. Do I miss it??? NO! Of course I did at first, but if you’re determined and stick with it, you’ll get to where you don’t! And, I was a vegetarian, I still despise meat, I used to eat nothing but pasta, bread, etc. But, I like not having to take insulin 4 times a day!!! We cook everything we eat, we don’t do fast foods. If we eat out we choose a restaurant where we can pick healthy choices. My husband lost a leg because of diabetes. If that isn’t a wake up call, I don’t know what is! It’s mind over matter! Really, it is! You do NOT NEED bread to survive! It’s not air! I don’t know where everyone lives, but if you’re in TEXAS and have a Braum’s Ice Cream (I know, I know…the irony) nearby, they sell a low carb bread that comes to only 4 carbs per slice. I think it’s called Carb Watch. If you have to have bread, it’s a good choice. I wish they sold it in grocery stores. My husband allows him self a slice for toast every now and then. But he knows that’s 4 g of carbs he has to do without for the rest of the day. Yes, I’m the carb police, but he’s not losing another limb on my watch!!! Nor am I! ♥️
@The SeasonedTeacher Aunt Millies is the brand. They are very good!
@The SeasonedTeacher keto and company fudge brownies. I add a half of a cup of sugar free peanut butter. The other items are Aunt Millies. Very good products!!!
@dreamcrone What is the brand that you buy for the brownies and ice cream that are low carb and doesn’t raise your glucose?
I disagree with your first two items but loved the rest of the alternatives on your list. So, I did give your video a thumbs up. I never even thought of using eggplants as a rollup. That sounds good. I love eggplants. I do have to disagree with your first two items on the list though. Whole Wheat that is bought in the store is heavily processed and therefore the germ has been killed and has no health benefits at all but yet still too high in carbs. Ezekiel Bread back in Biblical days was good because all of the wheat was ground by hand right before being used to make bread. The Ezekiel Bread sold in stores is processed long before it is made and consumed and it also has added Wheat Gluten which means that it is not good and will likely raise a person’s glucose level. Like I said though, I love the rest of the alternatives on your list and you did give me new ideas. Thank you.
The major problem isn’t bread – it’s modern wheat, produced by many crossings and manipulations in order to get Dwarf Wheat, which, unlike natural “wild” wheat has a very short stalk but a huge “ear” with big seeds. This actually has a protein wild wheat lacks – and which does you no good. It may even be why white wheat is addictive to many. So – get 100% whole grain Rye, or Maize, like tortilla’s. Although they do contain complex carbs, they dont contain the results of gene manipulation, and they aren’t addictive. You are happy to eat much less, in other words. If you can’t get 100% Whole grain Rye – buy the flour from an organic seller, and make your own bread, or make pan breads fresh for each meal.
Flaxseed meal with hot water blended to a dough consistency make a great low carb tortilla. It can be flavoured with cinnamon rolled very thinly and baked to a crispy texture. Then broken into small pieces and used as a cereal with homemade almond milk. Tastes great.
My Notes: at start: Whole wheat tortillas, 4:20 Ezekiel bread, whole wheat barley lentils sprouted wheat and sprouts 5:55 lettuce wraps 7:14 almond flour bread 8:40. ads 9:09 bell pepper 10:45. eggplant 12:00 cucumber 13:20 portobello mushroom buns. (Narrator calls this 8 bread alternatives)
Not sure about Ezekiel bread, but I’ve tried the whole wheat wraps with negative results. I try to stay away from foods made with grains; like, wheat (bread), rice, and corn. I have much better results with keeping my blood sugars lower.
I found “Keto Bread” at costco and it showed “0 carbs” through the sugar alcohol and fiber. It was the first and only low-carb bread I tasted that was good a sandwich bread. It was fantastic when making grilled cheese. I am a diabetic who has controlled his sugar for over a diabetes and take no medication with A1C averaging below 6.0 with the last three 5.7, 5.3, and 5.8. I get checked yearly and only test blood occasionally. I starting eating this “Keto Bread” and didn’t check my sugar, as I had in the past when trying something new, against their claim of “0 carbs.” I work up one night and had the burning sensation on top of my feet that I had before I was diagnosed as a diabetic. I had to take one foot and rub the top of the other foot to ease the discomfort. I tested my blood when I got up. It was in the upper 180s and I had been picking up weight which I had maintained for over a decade. I hadn’t had a reading for years like that. I then looked at the likely culprit and narrowed down the “Keto Bread” from Costco made by Franz bakery. Franz bakery won’t make a claim that is is safe for diabetics and wrote that they have never marketed it as safe for diabetics (words matter). I controlled carbs and will cheat slightly as a rule, but only for spectacular foods and small portion. I threw the bread out and stopped short-cutting. Lost seven pounds in two-weeks without trying, blood sugar in below 120, and no more discomfort or pain. I lost over 70lbs when I was first diagnosed with diabetes using Atkins book as a guide. I am like you and usually around 10 carbs per day. Good luck to you. It isn’t easy, but having seen my grandfather lose both legs with progressive amputations (he didn’t know he had diabetes) up his leg when they wouldn’t heal. It still drives me to take care. I earned my diabetes. I don’t blame anyone but me for causing this health problem.
If you are diabetic, it’s best to avoid the whole grain wraps and the Ezekiel bread. The carbohydrate content of the wraps, while lowish compared with ordinary white bread, is still too high. Without extra insulin, your blood sugar will go way above the normal range. The Ezekiel bread still contains too many carbs. Both foods do contain vitamins, etc, but you first aim is to normalize your blood sugars within the normal range (75 – 108 US units; 4.2 – 6.0 European units). Many doctors are soft with high blood sugars; get a straight talking one.
Great video, thank you. I make a tortilla from chick pea flour, I will start to sprout seeds. I also make a wrap from romaine lettuce and savoy leaves. I will also try sweet pepper , eggplant, portobello replacement
P p p ppl
Best beans for sprouting are the mung beans.
Thank you for sharing your story. This is a wake up call for me!
Thanks, Sparks!
Wow! Just those TWO ingredients? The Flaxseed meal & hot water???
@Flashlite Striker You are most welcome. I like to have time stamps, recipe ingredients…. it makes it easier to recreate what I’ve watched…. and to make grocery lists.
We use slices of cheese instead of bread when we make sándwiches! Works great. Of course you can make burgers, sandwiches, etc. using lettuce leafs. Iceburgers are actually better than a regular burger on a bun. A large leaf, mayo or the spread of your choice, a second leaf with the meat, cheese, tomato, onion, pickles whatever you eat on a burger place the leafs together, tuck the edges under and dig in. I love making mine with bacon, mushrooms and Swiss plus onion and tomato…sooooo yummy!
I introduced you to I introduced you to DOCTOR OSEIWE on YouTube who cured me from #Diabetes’ with his herbal medicine and be cured completely..
@Devi Mathura just eat beef, salt and water, that it, you don’ tneed any of the other crap. Just try it for 3 months…see how you doing….your going to be amazed. Just think no spending 2hrs prepping and cooking food. Just toss a hamburger in the pan, cook a steak on the grill…say u can’t afford get all beef hotdogs….Collogen and chromium and magnesium are the nutrition block to lowering and getting rid of diabetes. Veggie have chromium but it is locked in the fiber so the body gets very little of it, but beef has good amounts as well. Oh did i mention make the cuts of meat very fatty….that where the collegon is, in the fat connection tissues…the grissle. Good luck it not hard just need to get in a different headspace then what the government been teaching. Look up Dr. Ken Berry on youtube, heck just type carnivore in youtube see what the doctors are talking about.
Wow arnt you awesome !!
My almond flour bread came out perfect and delicious. I like to add fennel seeds and chopped Pereskia leaves tô the dough.
Recipe please
@Lisa Thompson But isn’t it harmful to our liver if we’re just eating meat? Do you eat a lot of veggies too? How about heart issues?
@Francia Santiago i’ll keep that in mind because i love pasta
Portobello mushrooms as a burger bun is genius! I’ve been on the Keto diet for around a year, not for diabetes just to lose weight. Thanks for the tip I love mushrooms, and I love burgers so I can’t wait to try it, making Fat Head dough all the time can be a real chore.
portobello mushroom caps are a good option, but not for those on a low purine lifestyle due to gout. Mushrooms will likely trigger a gout flare for many dealing with gout. As for eggplants…I’ve experimented a bit with it..if it is cooked without the outer skin..at least for me I don’t get a flare up.
Recipe pleeeease
@leabinales Your liver will thank you if you just eat beef, salt and water. I eat no veggies, no dairy, just beef, salt and water. I turned 60 a few days ago. 3 yrs ago, my doctor wanted to put me statin, my bp wasl 180/110 . One yr of eating only beef, salt and water, and my bp clocks in at 117/84 regulary. Liver gone from a 2 to a 1….sounds like it getting better to me. All I can tell ya is, it is just food, the only thing the body needs it protein and fat, no carbs ever needed. Watch if you want to learn about new research.

@dreamcrone I know you mean well but please remember, you can’t expect folk from other countries eg here in the UK to know that American brands? I’d prefer to know a low carb British brand .We have our own brand names of stuff, as does most countries .
*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*
Thanks, but not paying $56.95 for a loaf, not to affordability, rather to many ppl in the world not being able to afford food, milk from their children. It’s happening here in the USA. Heartland. America us not only East and West coast. I watched documentaries that broke my heart. West VA, not even having water running.
.l……………….?………?????Eat at? Eat it? happened.?.I LOVE.?.?

If you study the history of the milling and making of bread, you will find that modern milling and baking are not the same as traditionally bread making. You are right about white flour. You did not go far enough to mention the added chemicals to mass produced bread bought in stores. In my childhood you bought bread in the store and in a week it started to mold. Now, a loaf sits on top of my frig and never molds. I bake my own sourdough bread with half white unbleached flour and whole wheat flour. Also, bread is gluten and there is nothing wrong with it. Low Carb thinking is madness. Go whole foods plant based.
@Lisa Thompson Great!!! Would you please share that apart from food you have mentioned, what fruits and veggies are a part of your diet.
Your response would be highly appreciated.
Thank you.

My suspicion is that they use starch to make it zero calories. Starch is just as bad or worse than flour. That’s why Asians are so skinny with diabetes.
make her a test in laboratory
Aldi has a Keto bread and bun.
Ezekiel breadbis awesome.
yeah just make a salad or try almond bread?
im diabetic and i stopped eating bread when i did keto diet, however i started feeling horrible, tried to find another diet which is agoge and it helped me still eat the thing that i want with their personalized diet 🙂
Yes, there is juvenile diabetes 1 which can be very serious ! Should be checked
Ezekiel bread is found in the freezer case and is delicious when toasted. It runs about $5-6 for a small loaf that are thin sliced. I keep it in the freezer then toast it.
Aldi also carries a similar sprouted loaf that I also love.
@FigNewton – Sara Lee has a 0 carb bead that I’m going to try off of Amazon.
@Dawn What,s the name of the bread you buy at Aldi?
@Linda LoeperAldi’s bread is a 7-grain sprouted bread called ‘Knock Your Sprouts Off’. Small thin slices. Excellent toasted for breakfast or toasted for sandwiches. Best toasted!
Thank you! ❤️
