Oreo Cookies vs. Bananas: What Spikes Blood Sugar More?
I checked my blood glucose prior to and also after eating Oreo cookies and bananas. The video shows the blood sugar level effect of consuming 2 boxes of Oreo cookies and 3 bananas. Using a constant glucose screen, I contrast my blood sugar before consuming the cookies as well as the bananas as well as for a few hours after eating them.

I am type 2 with A1C fairly stable around 6.5. My Doc convinced my insurance to spring for 3 Dexcom G7 sensors so I could further refine time in range. I have been running all kinds of similar tests with different foods and different exercise timing. My goal is a 5 hour New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream test.
This is a very interesting experiment. Wow 8 Oreos, you are a brave man! Interesting how fast each one raises your blood sugar blood. Given the smaller rise than expected, you must be nicely insulin sensitive.
Good idea for the video. I actually eat a type of long wafers (they come in twos) with chocolate made in Venezuela called Suzy (17g carbs, 9g sugar, 2g protein, 6g fat) before I exercise and I drink a banana shake with either one or two spoonfuls (depending on how low I am) of honey to raise my blood sugar half way through training. Would be great if you make a video similar to this one, but foods to eat before training. Great work, keep it up!
I actually think the increased protein and carbs in the cookies helped too not see a crash. I am gestational diabetec and do great with vanilla ice cream by itself but cannot have fruit by itself because the fat is too low on the fruit.
i was experimenting with protein intake over the last two months. Methodology is same amount of carbs and fats but the amount of protein changes. I found out that my blood sugar level slightly increases and stays stable over two hours and then starts to rise after that if i took more protein than i needed or goes down if i take low amount of protein. I am currently trying to gain some weight and protein helps really well. I feel more full for way longer. My last periodic controls were really good. I am healthier than ever.
However i increased my basal insulin by 1 unit(15 to 16). I am probably gonna increase it by 1 more unit. I need to eat more 😀
I have a banana every day about 3 hours after breakfast along with an apple. They give me the pick up I need before lunchtime. I’ve never taken any extra insulin for the banana though.
Your straight lines staying inside the green zone is astonishing. Mine has always looked like the Swiss Alps.
EDIT: you have so many vids, is there anything discussing how to get through the night with stable sugar? How is it so normal when you wake up???
I’m jealous that you only need 3.5 units of Insulin for stable BG after all those carbs. Some of us would see numbers in the teens with such a small dose!
What an interesting reaction thanks.
What concentration of insulin do you use? You only took 3.5 units. I would need 14 units of Apidra (100) to eat those
Great video, showing how glucose level depends from and food category.
Thank you
His insulin-to-carb ratio is 1:18, he takes 1 unit every 18 carbs
same problems here, i got spikes all the time, and dont even start about waking up…
Just come across your channel. Some good information there and adding to it I would like to say that I have found that lemon and ginger tea also lowers my sugar level. (I am a type one diabetic for over 30 years).
I love bananas so much! They spike my sugar a lot, but we are still trying to figure out my fast acting insulin dosing.. I’m on a ratio: 1u insulin: 4gm carb. I’ve not exercised like I should..I really need to get back in that routine.. It’s so hard for me..I like to eat comfort food too much!!
If you are a type 2 and overweight you can normally improve your situation dramatically with weight loss. Changing your mind about your eating habits is a good place to start. Many type 2’s end up on insulin eventually too. Try the low carb high fat diet and you can slim down without starving yourself or engaging in extreme exercise.
I was wondering about the concentration of insulin used in his pump U-100,200,300,500.
I use the pen, Apidra u-100 but I have been doing Keto and IF for a very long time so have become very insulin resistant. On the other hand becomes I am in ketosis most times so my brain is use to suing ktones i have no problem at all with BG in the mid 2[s. It is not until I get as low as 1.6 before I have any issues
Up until the point in which you stated that you’d taken insulin before the meals I was confused as to how little your blood glucose had changed. One banana smashes me, i’m not taking insulin.
@Jack Schitt Most def. I have already lost a few pounds while playing with the Dexcom. The point of a high fat premium ice cream test is to get an understanding of how certain medications I am on control the rate of food, and therefore glucose, absorbtion. It’s not an excuse to eat things I should not. I am sacrificing for science!
Yep same here. I’m wondering if the insulin pump helps as I’m on injections only
Im curious to know if its your insulin pump that keeps you in the green all the time. Im on injections only and have never had such a straight line like yours. Eating those cookies would have spiked my sugars despite using rapid insulin
I have found in most cases it is portion size is more important. As in your test, 2 oreos or 1 banana instead.
I liked this video format, very interesting! It would be cool to see you do more of these comparisons. One I’m interested in is the difference between oatmeal made with rolled oats vs. steel cut oats.
Oh wow, the tea actually helps lower your sugar level? That’s good to know, I’ll have to try that.
Steel cut oats is so hard to chew
@Sab Ssoak them overnight
Hi! I managed to have straight lines at night with injections only. What works for me, I eat my last meal until 7 PM, nothing with heavy carbohydrates just a light meal. I also had to change the timing of my tresiba injesction, if I gave it in the evening my BG was always low in the morning, now I give it in the morning and this resulted beautiful straights at night. As I experienced my BG is always jumping up by 2-3 mmol/l after I fall asleep, I check it before I’m going to bed and if it is higher than 8 mmol/l I add a unit of rapid acting insulin. This is olny my experience, but maybe you can get some ideas based on it 🙂
Great experiment, thanks for sharing your information !
